Catalyst for … (social change) … fedora 10 and kernel 2.6.29 with fglrx catalyst 9.3 / 9.4 / 9.5

April 19, 2009

Getting the fglrx proprietary driver up adn running on Fedora 10 i386 seems a pain. When paired with a Sceptre X22WG ( a 22″ 1680×1050 monitor with VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs ) seems an even bigger headache.

When you update to kernel 2.6.29 , be warned that the Catalyst drivers are yet to do so!

Get info on the patch at the Archlinux forums at

Get your catalyst drivers at this link:

* You need the kernel sources / headers present for this to build

* Run ./ to install the driver

* Check the driver install log at /usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log . It will probably mention that the kernel module could not be built.

* Copy the patch 2.6.29.diff to / .  run:   patch -p0 < 2.6.29.diff . This will patch the driver files at /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod .

* Next run from /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod . If the build succeeds, run from /lib/modules/fglrx .

Go be the catalyst!

I was able to set my Asus M2A-VM (690G) to drive 1680×1050 over VGA and DVI  to the Sceptre 22″ X22WG .

Update: This works on my Spanking new XFX Radeon HD 4770 with catalyst 9.5 as well!

Hack a Thon, Hackathon!

January 13, 2007

Hear Ye, Hear ye,

Terrasoft, (maker of all things for the PowerPC) , maker of YDL 5.0 for the PS3
is conducting a hackathon.

Now contrary to popular assumption , this has nothing to do with gardening or any other outdoor sport. Check out for the low down on the event.

Any volunteers? Colorado or Bust.

(Sounds like i’m not gonna get either)

Anyway, Things i’d like to see on the Cell/PS3:

1. Optimised MM Codecs that will kick the Core2Duo’s a$$

2. Use the TOSLink for high speed data transfer between PS3’s

3. Connect 2 PS3’s in a SLI / Crossfire config

4. Power saving mode / multitasking

5. Custom firmwares ( like Slinky , my WRT54G! )

6. More love, More power, More flight simulators in my life!

7. A Bulletproof / scratch proof surface

8. Backlit USB ports. ( So we can see where the hell we are plugging in stuff..)

9. Mac OS X on the Cell.

10. A way to use a friggin laptop monitor as a display for the PS3 (in hi-def)

11. Cheaper friggin HDMI cables.

12. Shutting down the evil CBEC!

13. ….

Any inputs? Hmm.. Do i smell a platinum sponsor?

Nokia Firmware updates…

August 22, 2006

Greetings weary traveller…

Nokia has released firmware updates for some Symbian S60/S40 phones. These updates can be downloaded from the Nokia UK Webpage @,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate

The N80 has got the first FOTA upgrade ( Firmware over the air ). Check out for more info . This allows you to download the firmware onto the phone using GPRS / WLAN and install it directly.

The firmware updates are available for free download for the following phones.. the N70 / N72 , 6630 , 6680, 6681 , 6682 6131. —  The 6131 supports FOTA, ( since it is based on S60 V3 ). The other phones will have to be upgraded using a PC and a data cable.–

— A firmware upgrade on a phone usually has a bunch of fixes/upgrades to the software. So it’s usually a good thing to have the latest firmware…  If you plan to do this, make sure to plugin your phone to the wall charger, and close all running applications!

Eeeeee Series!

July 1, 2006

I have been smitten!

Not (yet) by a pretty lass, but by a swelte and slim beauty …  the nokia E61.

This crackerry..err..blackberry crusher has Quadband GSM i.e. GSM 850/900/1800/1900, Class 11 GPRS, Class 11 EGPRS/EDGE,  and 3G/UMTS/WCDMA 2100 Mhz for Asia/Europe/somewhere else. Not enough for you? I forgot to mention WiFi connectivity 802.11g , IR (at a very, very odd position) and bluetooth. Its got a QWERTY keyboard and a 320×240 TFT @ 16 million colours , and runs S60 3rd edition (Symbian OS 9.1 ) .. ~sweet!

It doesnt have a camera / FM / Bluetooth A2DP (stereo) , but then is that asking for too much? I think not… 🙂

Did some research today… has got some great info about this gizmo. Also, check out  PalmSolo’s flickr E61 photostream with some nice unboxing snaps.
OSnews has a great review as well here

🙂 … This is available for about 18.5K (INR) and comes with a 64MB memory card and the mono handsfree kit. (i wonder why they stuck with mono? ) . All N-series and E-series devices seem to have the tiny pin type charging pin, which almost renders your collection of nokia chargers useless. There is an adapter cable provided though, but who wants to carry it around? Some other links as well…’s E61 review
