Photography in the air…

December 28, 2008

Photography at Indian airports and onboard an aircraft is governed by the Aircraft Rules, 1937.dsc_1310

According to Rule 13:

Photograph at aerodromes or from aircraft in flight – No person shall take, or cause or permit to be taken, at a Government aerodrome or from an aircraft in flight, any photograph except in accordance with and subject to the terms and conditions of a permission in writing granted by the Director-General, a Deputy Director-General, the Director of Regulations and Information or a Controller of Aerodromes of the Civil Aviation Department :

Provided that the Director-General from time to time, may, by notification in the official Gazette, direct that these restrictions shall not apply to photography at any Government aerodrome, or within such limits of any Government aerodrome as may be specified in the order. See S.O. 1353 (E)

As published in S.O. 1353 (E)

the Director General of Civil Aviation hereby directs that the restrictions on photography at a Government aerodrome as specified in rule 13 of the said rules shall not apply to the terminal buildings of (i) Civil aerodromes and (ii) Civil enclaves at defence aerodromes

Two other notifications from the DGCA:

AIC 7 of 2004 Order No 9/12/2003-IR — Permission of photography inside an aircraft

Photography at terminal building in civil aerodromes

So, apparently, photography is permitted in airports and from inside the airline. Now why is it that the airline staff are not aware of such a decision!

Also, any ideas on which airports are classified as defence aerodromes?

Update:

Just back from Bengaluru! BIAL info counter and Kingfisher ground staff tell me that i can take photos at the airport, ( and on the ground 🙂 ) . Outside the aircraft, i am informed that BIAL is on “High alert” , and I am not supposed to take pictures. So who decides? DGCA / ground staff / Airport information ?

The latest info from the DGCA @ http://dgca.nic.in/new.htm

ASC 01 of 2009 – Checklist of Air Safety Circulars , which lists this as the most current ASC relating to photography :-
ASC 03 of 2003 – Photography from an aerodrome or from an aircraft in flight.
